What is a Degree Apprenticeship?
A
degree
apprenticeship
is
a
way
of
attaining
a
degree-level
qualification
in
Mechanical,
Civil
and
Electrical
Engineering
without
having
to
quit
the
employment
and
assume
a
loan.
It
is
a
work-based
degree
that
integrates
academic
learning
with
on-the-job
practical
training.
Degree
apprenticeships
are
co-designed
by
employers
and
Industry
Training
Providers
(ITPs)
and
are
usually
a
mixture
of
industry-based
project
work
as
well
as
blended
online
courses
that
include face to face time with tutors through planned block courses.
The first Degree Apprenticeship in New Zealand
While
degree
apprenticeships
are
common
in
the
United
Kingdom
and
elsewhere
in
the
world,
the
first
degree
apprenticeship
in
New
Zealand
has
been
offered
in
2020
through
a
partnership
between
Wellington
Institute
of
Technology
on
the
North
Island
and
Otago
Polytechnic
on
the
South
Island.
The
focus
of
this
pilot
programme
is
to
train
engineers
to
look
after New Zealand’s Infrastructure, an important job that requires specialist knowledge.
